The Rector and the Academic Community of Assumption University of Thailand record our grief and deep sense of loss at the passing away of Rev. Fr. Franz Josef Eilers SVD on January 13, 2021 in The Philippines. As one of the active Executive Secretaries of the FABC-Office of Social Communications, Fr. Eilers organized at least five of his commissions meetings at Assumption University’s Suvarnabhumi campus.

While attracting many of the Catholic Church’s clergy from Asia and The Vatican, and journalists and media personalities from the region, the meetings organized by Fr. Eilers were always through provoking, even while he had as a personal mission to provide hands on Catholic ethics and moral teachings to the participants.

The Assumption University staff, both Catholic and Buddhist were inspired by Fr. Eiler’s passion, his intellectual prowess and more than all his simplicity. His directions to the operational staff, and to the organizers were always clear and punctuated with humor. Though he was German, he clearly displayed his mastery over the Filipno and South East Asian cultures by being easy going and yet, mission driven.

His Communications Institutes held at Assumption University and St. John’s Universities in Bangkok brought together clergy and academicians to dialog and to explore ways to spread the Christian message of truth and objectivity in communications in Christian and non Christian communities alike.

Short in stature, Fr. Eilers was indeed a Giant for the Christian cause of communications with justice, peace and love. His work will live on. We miss him.
May God Grant him eternal rest, and may the light of Christ’s love always shine on him in his eternal rest.
